Szczawno-Zdrój — the history and charm of a spa town

Szczawno-Zdrój is a small town with a rich spa history, full of greenery and historic architecture. The first mentions of local mineral springs date back to the 13th century, and in 1815 Prince Hochberg from the nearby Zamek Książ turned his village into a fully-fledged spa. In the 19th century, Szczawno (then known as Bad Salzbrunn) was one of the most renowned resorts in the region — between 1909 and 1911 the grand Grand Hotel (today's Dom Zdrojowy) was built here, hosting guests including Kaiser Wilhelm II and a young Winston Churchill.

The heart of the spa town is Park Zdrojowy im. Henryka Wieniawskiego, where every day at noon and in the evening the melody of the park's patron's compositions rings out from Wieża Anny. Right next door, just 50 metres from Dom z Piernika, lies the wilder Park Szwedzki — perfect for a morning walk with the dog. Despite its closeness to Wałbrzych, Szczawno has kept the charm of a small, green and intimate spa town where everywhere is within walking distance.
